The number of teeth in handcuffs and other restraints is significantly responsible for safety when individuals are arrested.

In order for the shackle of the handcuff and other retraints to engage in the lock the double strand has to be equipped with a pawl respectively teeth as well. More teeth mean a higher degree of security of the restraint. Because the teething of the single strand is held in a more stable manner respectively clamped through the engaging of several recesses. In addition a higher number of teeth can also heighten the number of locking positions and therefore makes it possible to fit the handcuffs or other restraints to the circumference of the wrists optimally.

The teeth can be designed in one or several rows in the double strand of the restraint. Again, the more rows are given, the higher are safety and security.
